The John Edwards and Hilliary Clinton campaigns were quick to pooh-pooh the opening of Barack Obama campaign offices throughout the state and, notably, here in Nor'Town. (MM)
In fact, an office in North Las Vegas may be a waste of campaign funds. Assuming the Nevada Caucus will matter at all, an assumption still untested, it turns out the caucus will be weighted such that Democrats in rural counties count more than urbanites. A rural caucus goer is equal to 10 from Las Vegas or Reno. That's one reason Clinton is working Pahrump so hard and why Obama took the time to visit Elko, of all places. (RNDCB) And maybe an office in Elko would get more bang for the buck.
And then there's Nor'Town's legendary apathy. Will Nor'Towners greet Obama with their characteristic yawns?
Still, having a presidential campaign office in one's oft-ignored town/city may win Barack some votes just because it indicates at least he gives a damn about North Las Vegas--which is more than can be said about most politicians, and, unfortunately, too many of our fellow Nor'Towners.
And it looks like the Obama office is energizing local Democrats. The North Las Vegas Democrats just sent out an e-mail blast touting the office opening. If Obama can breathe life into Nor'Town's political corpse, maybe he should be president.
Now, if only he'd shut up about that coal junk.
