Boys Night Out at City Council

Well, unlike the Mayor and William Robinson and Robert Eliason, I did what the Nor'Townie website told me to do Wednesday and stayed home during the snow day.

Stephanie Smith and Shari Buck missed the meeting, where the boys handed over the care of crumbling tenements to the city from the failed Housing Authority, on which all of the boys serve as well.

Apparently no 20 pound ring binders were thrown around, either.

And there seems to be something wrong with my invite to the state of the city address. I can't quite make out what's supposed to be under that welcome mat.

BSOTDO9!

Oh yeah. One of our more famous Nor'Townie entrepeneurs has new living arrangements. (RJ)

I attended the NLV Council meeting on Wed. night and was appalled (but not surprised) by the low level of professionalism shown by the individual council members. One of the agenda items pertained to a young woman's appeal for a work card, which seemed prerequisite for her to get a job at the Palomino Club. It was quite a spectacle to see the three grown men on the Council address the issue of the young woman's previous arrest for prostitution! As the audience shifted uncomfortably in their seats, Councilman Robinson stated his belief in "second chances" and then asked the witness -er- applicant if she had listened to the prayer at the beginning of the council meeting! He is the last person on earth who should be preaching morality to anyone! Councilman Eliason then added his two cents that he "didn't feel comfortable" with granting a work permit for the Palomino Club to someone with a past that included prostitution. Gasp! What kind of respectable people does he think want to work at the Palomino? And to the larger point - why in the world is the NLV City Council spending time discussing such matters?! Surely there is a better way to issue work cards without making such a spectacle of a person's private life.

A few items later, the Council was considering approval of a contract for professional services related to more planning for historic preservation of the adobe at Kiel Ranch. Councilman Robinson piped up to ask the Parks Director: "Is this adobe really worth saving?" This question is nothing short of Incredible! The adobe at Kiel Ranch is one of the oldest structures in the state of Nevada - a priceless historic artifact. Negligence by the current council and prior councils is the primary reason that the adobe now sits in such a precarious state of disrepair For a sitting Councilman - indeed, the councilman who represents the area where Kiel Ranch is located - to ask such a question is deeply troubling but all too indicative of the lack of intelligence and understanding on this council. With a dunderhead like William Robinson making decisions for the City, is it any wonder North Las Vegas is so dysfunctional? And one more item - at the end of the meeting, Mayor Montandon commented that he sort of missed having the councilwomen, Shari Buck and Stephanie Smith around to spice things up. Not to let an opportunity go by to disparage women, Councilman Robinson again piped up to add that having the "chattering girls" gone for the night helped move things along a little faster. Chauvinist! He would not get away with such antics anywhere else but Nor'town. It is appalling that a so-called community leader continues to express such contempt for women and nobody does anything but call him an adorable old crumudgeon. North Las Vegas definitely needs new people to step forward and run for elective office - the quicker the better.
