"Something They're Not Used to from a Politician"

So gubernatorial spokester and fall guy Ben Kickheifer so aptly characterized the dazed sense of betrayal felt by citizens of Elko County towards the man they helped make Nevada Gube. (Sun)

Well, sorta. Elkonians made up less than 3% of the votes cast for the Governor, but let's not undermine their false sense of importance by suggesting that Las Vegas casino mogul money buying up commercials about "Gibbons' Country" had a sight more to do with the outcome than the Elko County Republican party. But, it would be just plain mean to say that out load and burst that bubble.

Still many things can be learned from Coolican's brave exodus to Nevada cow country. To whit.

-- Elko has a political elite. Who knew?

-- They dislike the Governor so much that they are even considering the well-coifed, metrosexual Dean Heller as a suitable replacement. Guess Elko's ready for guys who use body wash.

-- They like taxes as long as everybody outside of Elko is paying them so Elko folk don't have to.

-- Elko ranchers are really, really wimpy because one of the things they're really skeered of is Clark County Democrats. Why, that's like being skeered of the Keystone Cops. Or Homer Simpson, for you youngsters out there who only watch the talkies.

Over in the RJ we are witness to the tragic hexameters of Richard Mason, a member of the State Board of WTF?!?  Equalization. (RJ) He asks us to weep, weep for the long-suffering attorneys and C.P.A.'s who tirelessly volunteer to serve on the myriad of boards crammed into state government like roaches on a manure pile. Poor, dear fellows.

Too bad they don't use those positions to network with highly placed officials like the governor so as to get some billable hours working for those same officials. You know, like John Marvel did on that land deal.

Jeez, I never realized that all those realtors and developers sitting on all those planning commissions all over the state were only doing it for the salary and out of a selfless love for American democracy.

Soldier on, brave warriors for the American Dream!!
And gentlefolk in Nevada now abed
Will think themselves accursed they did not serve
On the state board of Equalization!

Mason's term to the Board of E expires October 1, 2008. That editorial of his in the RJ was his resume' for reappointment

There was a time when Elko County believed it was the job of Clark County residents to pave their roads with Clark County gas tax. One day, Clark County wizened up and a bill went through the legislature that no longer allows Elko County to "import" gas taxes from other counties until they are paying their fair share, 9 cents a gallon. Elko county is still not paying their fair share and they still long to be at the public trough.
