Well, It Doesn't Prove THAT
Gibbons' high powered attorney Abbe Lowell--who knew he was still working the case?--had this to say today:
Well, we already know he's not hard working, and he's not honest, and if you call alleged involuntary nonspousal gropin' "ethical", or kicking his wife out the door for no reason "ethical," or running the state into the ground all for the sake of a few votes in Incline Village, well, then by all means, call the Governor "ethical".
Anyways, Lowell is claiming that the FBI is dropping its investigation of the Goober for alleged bribe taking in the eTreppid scandal.
The Department of Justice has yet to make a statement but the AP reporter claims that "a law enforcement official" close to the case, speaking anonymously, has confirmed that the FBI will be dropping the investigation.
This does not mean, as Gibbons' pricey attorney claims, that Gibbons "did nothing wrong and there was no basis for any allegations against him." No, it means, if true, that the FBI couldn't get sufficient evidence against him, or that what Gibbons was doing is just Washington business as usual. It may be corrupt, evil, and a worse threat to our democracy than Al Qaeda, but most everybody is doing it, too.
What it does not change is that Gibbons was and remains the worst governor in the nation and that he should be removed from office at the first opportunity. It also doesn't change the fact that Gibbons thought nothing of taking cruises and gifts from fatcats who were using him to get access to your money.
Bear in mind, too, that Gibbons was pulling the money out of the secret appropriations for the spookier parts of our government. A number of his buddies, and the contractors they fed off of, are either in jail or facing charges for abusing those funds. Congress decided as soon as the Republicans lost their majority that that particular practice was unacceptable and made such appropriations more public.
So, Congress has determined that what Gibbons was doing was slimy, but it's just, apparently, not indictable.
It just won't be the FBI the gets rid of the governor, if what Lowell claims is true. It will have to be the folks that should have gotten rid of him long ago.
It's up to you.
Good thing the election will save us from paying any attention to the gloatfest that our desparate goober will no doubt indulge himself in the next few days. Take some consolation in that. And in the fact that the Reagan-Bush-Gingrich-Bush nightmare, of which Gibbers was such a willing part, will soon be part of past.
It's just too bad that we'll be left to clean up their nasty mess.
[UPDATE: NYT sez Lowell sez the Gube was interviewed by the FBI.]

It's from an expert who has been following these stories for
a long long time. Here's a quote from therein:
